IPTV Not Working? Fixes for Login, Channel and EPG Errors

IPTV not working? Fix login errors, “account expired”, too many connections, empty channel lists, wrong EPG times, black screens and crashing apps step by step.

When IPTV is not working, the error message or symptom usually points straight to the cause. Login failures are almost always a typo, an expired subscription or a changed server address. Empty channel lists and missing guides are usually a loading or settings problem in the player app. Find your symptom below and follow the fixes in order. If the problem is buffering or freezing rather than an outright failure, use our buffering checklist instead.

Before anything else: three quick checks

  1. Is the internet working on that device? Open another streaming app or the device’s browser. If nothing loads, fix the network first.
  2. Is it the account or the device? Try your login in the same player app on a phone or a second TV. If it works there, the account is fine and the problem is on the first device.
  3. Restart the device fully. Pull the power for 30 seconds or use the restart option in settings. This clears a surprising number of stuck sessions and app errors.

Quick reference: symptom to fix

Symptom Most likely cause First fix
“Invalid username or password” / authentication failed Typo, extra space, wrong case, wrong server URL Re-enter details carefully
“Account expired” or “account disabled” Subscription lapsed, or wrong account Check renewal status with your provider
“Max connections reached” / too many connections Another device still connected Fully close the app elsewhere, wait a few minutes
Channel list won’t load or stays empty Server URL changed, playlist timed out, app cache Refresh the playlist, clear cache, confirm URL
No guide (EPG) or “No information” EPG URL missing or not refreshed Add/refresh the XMLTV guide
Guide times are off by hours Wrong time zone or EPG offset Set Eastern Time; offset to 0
Black screen, audio plays Decoder or codec issue Switch hardware/software decoder
App crashes or closes Corrupt cache, low storage, outdated app Clear cache, free space, update
Stopped working after an update Settings reset, permissions changed Re-check settings and login

Login and authentication errors

Most IPTV apps log in with either an M3U playlist URL or Xtream Codes details (server URL, username and password). Errors here are nearly always entry mistakes.

  1. Re-type the server URL exactly, including http:// or https:// and the port number after the colon if one was given. A missing port is one of the most common errors.
  2. Check case. Usernames and passwords are often case-sensitive. Remote-control keyboards love to capitalise the first letter.
  3. Look for spaces. Copying details from a message can add a space at the start or end. Delete and re-type the field.
  4. Don’t mix login types. If you were given Xtream details, choose the Xtream login option in the app, not M3U, and vice versa.
  5. Avoid the on-screen keyboard where you can. Some apps let you enter details on a phone or through a web page by scanning a code, which removes typing errors.

If the same details fail in two different apps on two different devices, contact your provider: the account or server may need attention.

“Account expired” and “too many connections”

Account expired or disabled

This message usually means the subscription period ended, or that the app is using an old login from a previous account. Check the details stored in the app match the ones you were most recently sent. If you’ve renewed and still see the error, restart the app so it requests a fresh status from the server; if it persists, contact your provider with the username shown in the app.

Too many connections

Each subscription allows a set number of simultaneous streams. If you see “max connections” or a similar message:

  1. Check which other TVs, phones or tablets are watching.
  2. Fully close the app on devices you aren’t using. Pressing home often leaves the stream running in the background.
  3. Wait three to five minutes for the server to release the session.
  4. Try again.

If your household regularly needs more screens than your plan allows, compare our plans for options with more connections.

Channel list won’t load

  1. Refresh or reload the playlist from the app’s settings or playlist menu.
  2. Clear the app cache (Settings → Applications → your app → Clear cache on Fire TV and Android TV).
  3. Check the playlist URL is current. Providers sometimes move to a new server address or domain. If you received updated details, edit the existing playlist or add a new one with the new URL, then remove the old one.
  4. Increase the loading timeout if your app has that setting. Large lists can take a while on slower devices.
  5. Check storage. Low free space can stop a large list from saving. Keep at least 500 MB free.

If channels load but some categories are empty, the app may have a filter or parental control hiding them. Check the app’s category or lock settings.

EPG missing or showing the wrong times

No guide at all

The EPG (electronic program guide) usually comes from a separate XMLTV URL or is loaded automatically with Xtream logins.

  1. Open the app’s EPG settings and confirm a guide source is set.
  2. Choose Update EPG or Refresh guide, and give it a few minutes.
  3. If you use an M3U login, you may need to add the guide URL manually.
  4. Set the guide to update automatically, for example once a day.

Guide times are wrong

For Brampton and the rest of Ontario, the device should be on Eastern Time (EST in winter, EDT in summer).

  1. On the streaming device, set the time zone to Eastern Time (Toronto) and turn on automatic date and time.
  2. In the player app, set the EPG time offset or time shift to 0. An old manual offset is the usual culprit, especially after daylight saving changes.
  3. Refresh the guide.

If only a few channels show the wrong programme, the issue is in the guide data for those channels; report them to your provider.

Black screen with audio

Sound but no picture almost always means the device can’t decode the video format.

  1. Switch decoder: in the player settings, change between hardware and software decoding.
  2. Try the app’s other video player engine if it offers one.
  3. Try the HD version of the channel. Some older devices can’t decode certain 4K or HEVC (H.265) streams.
  4. Check HDMI: reseat the cable, try another HDMI port, and if you use a receiver or soundbar in between, connect the device directly to the TV to rule out an HDCP handshake problem.
  5. Turn off HDR or match-frame-rate options temporarily in the device’s display settings to see if the picture returns.

App crashes and problems after updates

The app keeps crashing

  1. Force-stop the app, clear its cache and reopen it.
  2. Free up storage by removing apps you don’t use.
  3. Update the app from its official store or the developer’s official source.
  4. If it still crashes, note your login details, then clear the app’s data or reinstall it.
  5. As a test, try a different player app; our guide to IPTV player apps explains what to look for.

It stopped working after an update

Device and app updates can change things behind the scenes:

  • App update: settings such as decoder, buffer and EPG offset can reset to defaults. Re-check them, and re-enter the login if prompted.
  • Device update: on Fire TV, a system update can turn off developer options or the permission that lets an installer app add apps. Check under Settings → My Fire TV. Our Fire TV setup guide shows where these settings live.
  • App removed from the store: player apps occasionally disappear from official stores. Your installed copy may keep working, but plan to move to a supported app.

When to contact your provider

Contact support if the same login fails in two apps, if you get “account expired” after renewing, or if channel lists stay empty after you’ve confirmed the URL. Send the error message (a photo of the screen helps), the app and device you use, and what you’ve already tried. You’ll find ways to reach us on our contact page.

Questions

Why does my IPTV work on my phone but not on my TV?

The login is fine, so the issue is the TV device or its app: an outdated player, a full cache, missing codec support or a typo in the details entered with a remote. Re-enter the details on the TV carefully, update the app, and try a different decoder setting.

How long should I wait after closing an app on another TV?

Usually a few minutes. Servers often keep a connection open briefly after a stream stops. Fully close the app (not just press home) on the other device, wait three to five minutes, then try again.

My guide shows the right shows but at the wrong times. Is the guide broken?

Almost never. The guide data is fine and the player is applying the wrong time zone or offset. Set the device to Eastern Time with automatic daylight saving, set the player’s EPG offset to zero, and refresh the guide.

Should I reinstall the app as a first step?

No. Reinstalling erases your settings and favourites and rarely fixes a login or server issue. Restart, check your details and clear the cache first. Reinstall only when the app itself keeps crashing.
