How to Use IPTV on Android TV and Google TV

Set up IPTV on Android TV or Google TV: Chromecast, Google TV Streamer, NVIDIA Shield or a TV set. Install from Google Play, sign in, load the guide, tune it.

IPTV on Android TV and Google TV is about as straightforward as it gets: install a player app from Google Play, sign in with your Xtream Codes login or M3U playlist URL, and load the programme guide. The same steps work on a Chromecast with Google TV, a Google TV Streamer, an NVIDIA Shield or a TV with Google TV built in, such as many Sony, TCL and Hisense models. Below is the full setup, the settings worth changing and fixes for common problems.

Which Android TV and Google TV devices work

All current Android TV and Google TV devices can run IPTV players from Google Play. What differs is speed, storage and connectivity.

Device Interface Ethernet Notes for IPTV
Google TV Streamer (2024) Google TV Built-in port Faster and more storage than older Chromecast models
Chromecast with Google TV (4K or HD) Google TV Via USB-C adapter with Ethernet No longer sold new by Google, but common in homes; storage is tight
NVIDIA Shield TV / Shield TV Pro Android TV Built-in port Strong performance; older software but still widely used
Sony, TCL, Hisense and other Google TV sets Google TV Usually built-in Speed depends on the TV’s processor
Other Android TV boxes Android TV Varies Stick to certified devices that include Google Play

Avoid uncertified “Android boxes” that come without Google Play or arrive “fully loaded” with apps. They often miss security updates, and pre-loaded boxes can come with unauthorised apps. Our streaming devices page compares these against Fire TV and Apple TV.

Step 1: Prepare the device

  1. Connect to your network. Use Ethernet where possible – the Google TV Streamer and Shield have a port, and most TVs do too. On Wi-Fi, choose your 5 GHz network.
  2. Update the system: on Google TV, go to Settings → System → About → System update. On Android TV and Shield, look under Settings → Device Preferences → About → System update.
  3. Sign in with a Google account if you haven’t already. Google Play needs it.

For more on choosing a connection, see our guide to Wi-Fi vs Ethernet for streaming.

Step 2: Install an IPTV player from Google Play

  1. On Google TV, go to Apps in the top menu, then select Search for apps. On Android TV, open the Google Play Store from the apps row.
  2. Search for “IPTV player”, “M3U” or the name of a player you have researched.
  3. Check the developer name, recent reviews and the last update date.
  4. Select Install, then Open.

Look for a player that supports Xtream Codes, M3U, XMLTV guides, favourites, catch-up (if your provider offers it) and adjustable buffer settings. Our guide to IPTV apps that work in Canada explains which features matter. Some players are free with ads; others have a one-time or subscription “premium” tier sold through Google Play.

Step 3: Sign in with your IPTV details

  1. In the player, choose Add playlist, Add user or Xtream Codes API.
  2. Enter the server URL exactly as provided, including http:// or https:// and the port number.
  3. Enter your username and password (case-sensitive).
  4. Select Next, Add or Login, then wait for categories to load.

M3U playlist URL

  1. Choose Add playlist → M3U URL or Playlist from URL.
  2. Enter the full link and save.

Typing with the on-screen keyboard is slow. Install the Google TV app on your phone to use its keyboard, or pair a Bluetooth keyboard under Settings → Remotes & Accessories.

Step 4: Load and check the programme guide

  1. Open the app’s TV Guide or EPG view. With Xtream Codes, the guide usually loads automatically.
  2. If it is blank, go to the app’s Settings → EPG and add your provider’s XMLTV URL.
  3. Set automatic guide updates every 12 or 24 hours.
  4. Match the time zone to Eastern Time (for most of Ontario) or adjust the time offset if listings are shifted.

Player settings and system display settings both affect picture and smoothness.

Where Setting Recommended starting point
Player app Decoder Hardware; switch to software only if you see a black screen or glitches
Player app Buffer size Medium; raise it if Wi-Fi is weak
Player app Stream format MPEG-TS first; try HLS if streams stall
Player app Deinterlacing On, if available, for older broadcast-style streams
System Frame rate matching On where available (see below)
System Resolution Auto, or your TV’s native resolution

Frame rate matching is labelled differently across devices. On many Google TV devices, look under Settings → Display & Sound → Advanced display settings for an option like Match content frame rate. On the NVIDIA Shield, it is under Settings → Device Preferences → Display & Sound → Advanced settings. Some players also have their own “auto frame rate” option – use one or the other, not both.

Remote tips

  • Map buttons: many players let you assign the channel or arrow keys to change channels, open the guide or show favourites. Look for Remote control or Key mapping in the app’s settings.
  • Favourites row: add your most-watched channels to a favourites group so you don’t scroll long lists.
  • Voice search on the Google TV remote searches Google’s catalogue, not your IPTV playlist. Use the search inside the player instead.
  • Default app: if you want the device to open straight into live TV, look for a “start on boot” option in the player.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause Fix
“Login failed” Typo, wrong port or http/https mix-up Re-enter details carefully
Channels load slowly or menus lag Low storage or a large playlist Clear the app cache in Settings → Apps, uninstall unused apps, hide unused categories
Picture stutters every few seconds Frame rate mismatch Turn on frame rate matching
Regular freezing in the evening Wi-Fi congestion or busy network Move to Ethernet; see our buffering fixes
Black screen with sound Decoder issue Switch between hardware and software decoder
Blank guide Missing XMLTV URL or first load still running Add the URL and give it a few minutes

Questions

What is the difference between Android TV and Google TV?

Google TV is the newer interface built on top of Android TV. Both use Google Play and run the same IPTV player apps. The main differences are the home screen layout and where some settings live.

Do I need to sideload apps on Google TV for IPTV?

Usually not. Google Play on TV devices has a good range of IPTV players that support Xtream Codes, M3U and XMLTV guides. Installing from Google Play is the safer choice and keeps apps updated automatically.

Can I cast IPTV from my phone to a Google TV instead?

Some phone apps support casting, but quality and reliability are better when the player runs on the TV device itself. Casting also ties up your phone. Use a player installed on the Google TV for everyday viewing.
