How to Install IPTV on a Smart TV: Samsung, LG and Google TV

Step-by-step IPTV install on Samsung, LG and Google TV sets: find a player, handle MAC or device key activation, add your playlist, load the guide, fix errors.

To install IPTV on a smart TV, you add a player app from the TV’s own store, connect it to your subscription with an Xtream Codes login or M3U playlist URL, then load the programme guide. On Google TV sets, you simply sign in inside the app. On Samsung and LG, many players use a device ID and a website to load your playlist, sometimes with a one-time activation fee. Below are the exact steps for each platform, plus fixes for the errors people hit most often.

What you need before you start

  • Your login details from your provider: Xtream Codes (server URL, username, password) or an M3U playlist URL.
  • An EPG (XMLTV) URL, if your provider supplies one separately.
  • A phone or computer for entering long URLs or activating the app.
  • A stable connection, ideally Ethernet. Most Samsung, LG and Sony TVs have a wired port.
  • Your TV updated to the latest software.

How activation-based apps work

Many IPTV players on Samsung and LG – and some on other platforms – don’t take your login on the TV. Instead:

  1. You install the app and open it. It shows a device ID, MAC address or device key on screen.
  2. On a phone or computer, you go to the app developer’s official website and enter that ID.
  3. On the same site, you add your playlist URL or Xtream Codes details.
  4. You restart the app on the TV, and it downloads your playlist.

Most of these apps offer a free trial period, then ask for a one-time activation fee per TV, paid to the app developer. That fee is separate from your IPTV subscription and the provider has no control over it. Terms change, so read the developer’s site before paying.

Platform Where apps come from Login usually entered Activation fee common?
Samsung (Tizen) Samsung Apps / Smart Hub Developer’s website via device ID Yes, for many players
LG (webOS) LG Content Store Developer’s website via device ID Yes, for many players
Google TV / Android TV Google Play Inside the app on the TV Less common; some apps have optional paid tiers

Samsung smart TVs (Tizen)

Menu names vary by model year. These steps match recent Samsung TVs; older sets use similar wording.

  1. Press Home on the remote and open Apps (sometimes shown as a grid icon in Smart Hub).
  2. Select the search icon and type “IPTV”, “M3U” or the name of a player you have researched.
  3. Open the app page, check the developer name and select Install.
  4. Open the app. Write down the device ID or MAC address it displays.
  5. On your phone or computer, type the developer’s official web address (usually shown in the app) and find the upload playlist or activation page.
  6. Enter the device ID, then add your M3U URL or Xtream Codes details. Save.
  7. If required, complete activation on the same site.
  8. Back on the TV, close the app fully (press and hold Back or Home) and reopen it. Your channels should load.

If the app isn’t in your store, your TV’s model year may not be supported. Check the developer’s site for a compatibility list.

LG smart TVs (webOS)

  1. Press Home and open the Apps or LG Content Store tile.
  2. Search for “IPTV” or the player’s name.
  3. Select the app and choose Install.
  4. Open the app and note the device ID or MAC address.
  5. On a phone or computer, go to the developer’s official site and add your playlist or Xtream Codes details against that ID.
  6. Pay the activation fee if the trial has ended and you want to keep the app.
  7. Restart the app on the TV to load your channels.

LG TVs can show the network MAC address under Settings → All Settings → General → About This TV (or Support → TV Information on some models). If the app asks for a MAC, make sure you are reading the one shown in the app, as some apps generate their own ID.

Google TV and Android TV sets

On Sony, TCL, Hisense and other Google TV sets, you sign in on the TV itself.

  1. Press Home and go to Apps (or Search) at the top of the Google TV home screen.
  2. Search for the player app. Google Play shows TV-compatible apps only.
  3. Select Install. You may need to be signed in with a Google account.
  4. Open the app and choose Add playlist or Login with Xtream Codes.
  5. Enter the server URL (including http:// or https:// and any port), your username and password – or paste the M3U URL.
  6. Wait for channels and categories to load.

To type long details more easily, use the Google TV app on your phone as a remote keyboard, or pair a Bluetooth keyboard. Our Android TV and Google TV guide has more detail on recommended settings.

Load the programme guide (EPG)

  1. With Xtream Codes, most apps fetch the guide automatically. Open the Guide or EPG view to confirm.
  2. If it is empty, find Settings → EPG in the app (or the playlist settings on the developer’s website for activation-based apps) and add the XMLTV URL.
  3. Set an automatic refresh, such as once a day.
  4. If programme times are off by a few hours, adjust the time offset or time zone. Most of Ontario is on Eastern Time.

Common errors and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
“Invalid login” or “authorization failed” Typo in server URL, username or password; missing port Re-enter carefully; check http vs https and the port number
App opens but no channels appear Playlist not uploaded to the right device ID, or app not restarted Confirm the ID on the website matches the TV; fully close and reopen the app
“Trial expired” or “activate this device” App trial ended Activate on the developer’s official site, or switch to another player
Guide is blank No EPG URL, or guide still loading Add the XMLTV URL and wait several minutes for the first load
Channels freeze or stutter Wi-Fi signal or network congestion Use Ethernet; see our buffering fixes

When the TV isn’t the right device

If your TV’s store has no suitable player, the activation process is a hassle on several TVs, or the app runs slowly, a streaming device is often the better route. Questions

If I reset my TV, do I need to pay for activation again?

Usually not. Activation is tied to the device ID or MAC address, which normally stays the same after a factory reset. Reinstall the app, confirm the ID matches, and reload your playlist through the developer’s website. Check the app’s own policy to be sure.

Can I move an activated app to a new TV?

Activation is generally per device, so a new TV usually needs its own activation. Some developers offer transfers; check their official site.

Is it safe to enter my IPTV login on an app developer’s website?

Only use the developer’s official website, reached by typing the address shown inside the app. Never use a link sent by a stranger or found in a video comment. Your IPTV provider and the app developer are separate companies.
